What reconditioning actually involves
The word gets used loosely in this trade — plenty of yards describe a rinse and a wipe as reconditioning. Ours is a six-station line, and a container that fails at any station comes off it.
- Intake triage: prior contents verified against the declaration. Undeclared residue goes to quarantine, never to the wash bay.
- Wash: caustic or detergent depending on the residue, hot rinse, final rinse tested rather than assumed.
- Inspection: wall thickness at four points, weld integrity, foot squareness, collar and outlet threads, cage geometry checked against a jig.
- Hardware: new valve, new lid, new gasket on every unit without exception.
- Test: leakproofness at 20 kPa, recorded against the serial number, not the batch.
- Marking: fresh UN plate where the design type allows, wash certificate, interior photographs.
How to pick a grade without overspending
The most expensive mistake in used totes is buying Grade A for a job Grade B would do. The second is buying Grade B for a job that legally needs a current UN mark. Work backwards from the journey the container makes, not from what looks clean in a photograph.
Grade A — food-grade eligible
Single prior life, food only, documented. Bottle clear with no ghosting or permeation odour, wall thickness within 5% of new. This is what you buy for food, beverage, flavour, cosmetic and potable water work, and it is the only grade where the paperwork matters as much as the container.
Grade A — industrial
Cosmetically excellent, industrial history. Ideal for solvents, coatings, resins, ag chemistry and anything where appearance in front of a customer matters. Roughly 40–55% of the price of new.
Grade B — general purpose
Sound, tested, honestly scuffed. Staining, cloudiness and residual odour are normal; cracks and repairs are not. The right answer for non-regulated bulk liquids, site water, waste consolidation, construction and agriculture — and where most buyers should be looking.
Grade C — storage only
Holds liquid, stays put. Sold explicitly as non-transport. Perfect for static water storage, rainwater capture, ballast and upcycling projects at a fifth of the cost of a Grade A.
The environmental case, in one number
Reconditioning a 275-gallon composite tote avoids about 125 kg CO₂e — 17 kg of virgin HDPE never moulded and 42 kg of galvanised steel never smelted, net of the collection, wash and test. Granulating the same container and remoulding it recovers only about 46 kg. Reuse is not a slightly better version of recycling; it is roughly three times the saving.
What we will tell you not to buy
If you describe a job that a Grade C handles, we will quote you a Grade C. If you describe one that genuinely needs virgin resin and a current mark, we will say so even though it costs you more — and we will point you at rebottled units first, because they are cheaper than new and keep the steel in service.
Can a reconditioned tote carry dangerous goods?
Yes, provided it has been inspected, tested and marked under a valid competent-authority approval and its retest dates are current. Reconditioned is not a lesser legal category — it is the same container, requalified.
How long will a reconditioned tote last?
A well-treated composite tote typically runs three to five service cycles before the bottle is spent, and the cage will outlast several bottles. UV exposure is the main killer: store them under cover and you will get years more out of them.
Do I get to know what was in it before?
Always. Every unit ships with a prior-contents declaration from the original filler. If a seller cannot tell you what was in a tote, do not buy it.
