Why rebottling exists
The two halves of a composite tote age at completely different rates. The HDPE bottle is the consumable: UV degrades it, permeation contaminates it, stress cracking eventually finishes it. The galvanised steel cage is very nearly permanent. Scrapping a sound cage because its bottle has failed is one of the most wasteful habits in industrial packaging, and rebottling is the fix.
When to specify rebottled over reconditioned
- The prior contents rule out reuse — a solvent that has permeated the wall will leach back out for years, and no wash fixes that.
- Your customer or your own QA specification requires virgin resin, full stop.
- You need a current UN mark and the existing plate is missing, illegible or out of retest.
- You need food-grade at a volume the used market cannot supply that month.
- The bottle is physically failed — cracked, bulged, or with a damaged outlet collar.
What we do to the cage
A reclaimed cage is not simply washed and reused. It goes on a jig to check geometry, gets straightened where it has been racked or dropped, has broken welds re-run and corroded feet replaced, and is then re-plated under our own approval with a fresh design-type marking. A cage that cannot be brought back to specification goes to the steel mill rather than into a rebottle.
The honest comparison
Rebottled saves about 78 kg CO₂e per unit against buying new — less than the 125 kg you save by reconditioning, because you are still paying for 17 kg of virgin HDPE. If your job will genuinely tolerate a used bottle, recondition instead. Rebottling is for when it will not.
What ships with it
New gasket, new valve, new lid, a build record identifying which cage received which bottle, our test certificate, and the fresh UN plate. On food-grade builds you also get the virgin-resin documentation for the bottle.
Is a rebottled tote as good as new?
For everything the bottle touches, yes — it is a new bottle. The difference is a cage with a history, which has been inspected and re-certified. In practice a reclaimed cage that has passed the jig is often straighter than a new one that has been shipped badly.
Can I supply my own cages?
Yes. Send them in, we will assess how many pass, and rebottle those. It is common with fleet operators who have accumulated cracked bottles in sound steel.
Do rebottled totes get a new UN marking?
Yes, where the cage passes inspection and the build matches an approved design type. That is the whole point — it is a legally re-marked container, not a repaired one.
